The battle at Lacus Benacus ( Latin for Lake Garda ) was fought in November 268 on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy between the Alemanni and the Romans under Emperor Claudius Gothicus .

In the course of the year 268 an Alemannic army of about 100,000 warriors broke through the border on the Brenner and penetrated deep into Roman territory. The Roman army was weakened due to internal unrest and otherwise bound by an invasion of the Goths in the battle of Naissus . The Alamanni were able to occupy large parts of northern Italy without hindrance. Claudius Gothicus tried to persuade the Alemanni to withdraw through negotiations. When this failed, he decided to fight on the shores of Lake Garda. The emperor achieved a triumphant victory with his 35,000 soldiers and was able to kill or capture more than half of the opposing Alamanni. The escaped Alamanni fled back over the Alps.

The numbers of warriors were probably greatly exaggerated by the Roman historians to make the Roman victory appear more glamorous.
