Ekkard Brinksmeier (born December 30, 1952 in Herford ) is a German engineer. He is professor for manufacturing processes at the University of Bremen .

biography

From 1972 to 1978 Brinksmeier studied mechanical engineering with a focus on materials technology at the University of Hanover . From 1979 to 1982 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Manufacturing Technology at the University of Hanover with Hans Kurt Tönshoff . In 1982 he became the subject of fringe analysis polished workpieces doctorate . After that, from 1982 to 1992 he was chief engineer and head of the research area manufacturing processes at the same institute.

In 1986 he received the CIRP - FW Taylor medal. In 1991 the habilitation followed with the subject of process and workpiece quality in fine machining . Since 1992 he has been Professor of Manufacturing Processes at the University of Bremen and Director of the Manufacturing Technology Department of the Institute for Materials Technology Foundation (IWT) in Bremen . In 1997 he was the first Bremen scientist to be appointed to the Senate Committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for Collaborative Research Centers .

In 1999 he was also the first Bremen scientist to receive the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation , the most important German award for scientists. In the same year he hosted the founding conference of the European society for precision engineering and nanotechnology (EUSPEN) in Bremen.

Together with chemists , process engineers and fluid mechanics, Brinksmeier has set up a research and demonstration center for environmentally friendly production processes (ECO center).

From 2005 to 2007 Brinksmeier was President of EUSPEN. In 2005 he received extensive funding from the Volkswagen Foundation for the project "Fast nanometer pattern generation by a new hybrid cutting process for generating discontinuous diffractive optics".

In 2007 Brinksmeier was elected a Fellow Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) .

In 2009 he was awarded the Berninghausen Prize for excellent teaching and innovation from the University of Bremen.

On May 25, 2012, Brinksmeier was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering by RWTH Aachen University “in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements and application-oriented research in the field of ultra-precision technology” .

Since August 2013 Brinksmeier has been an elected member of the board of the "Collège International pour la Recherche en Productique" (CIRP) . Until 2017 he will hold various positions in this international academy for production technology: Vice President-Elect (2013/2014), Vice President (2014/2015), President (2015/2016) and Past President (2016/2017).

In 2014 Brinkemeier received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen). The prize is awarded at irregular intervals to scientists who have rendered outstanding services to the goals of the organization in the course of their research career.

Brinskmeier was and is significantly involved in the special research areas funded by the DFG “Process Chains for the Replication of Complex Optical Components” (SFB / TR 4, 2001–2012), “Microcold Forming - Processes, Characterization, Optimization” (SFB 747, 2006–2018) and “ Function-oriented manufacturing based on characteristic process signatures "(SFB / TRR 136, since 2014).
