The Battle of Placentia was fought in January 271 near present-day Piacenza ( Italy ) between Alemannic Juthung and Roman soldiers under Emperor Aurelian . The background was border disputes in today's Italy.
Aurelian advanced with his army against the Alemannic Juthung, who had previously invaded Italy. During the fighting, Aurelian was ambushed and caused his own defeat through insensitive behavior regarding his own fighting strength. His army was defeated by the Alamanni. The news of the defeat caused great uncertainty in Rome, probably triggered the revolt of the imperial finance minister Felicissimus and ultimately gave the impetus for the construction of the Aurelian Wall .
