Maniace is a city of the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy with 3762 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Maniace is 67 km northwest of Catania on the northwest slope of Mount Etna . The residents mainly work in agriculture and animal husbandry.
The neighboring municipalities are Bronte , Cesarò ( ME ) and Longi ( ME ).
history
The place was named after Georgios Maniakes , who temporarily liberated parts of Sicily from the Arabs in 1038. In 1174, the abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace was founded here by Margaret of Navarre , on the site of an already abandoned Greek monastery. The place developed in the vicinity of this abbey. The Admiral Nelsons family lived here from 1799 . Until 1981 Maniace was part of Bronte .
