Militello in Val di Catania or Sicilian Militeddu in Val di Catania is a municipality with 7062 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy . The place is one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto , which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Location and dates

Militello in Val di Catania is 51 km southwest of Catania on the north side of the Monti Iblei . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and animal husbandry.

The neighboring municipalities are Francofonte ( SR ), Lentini (SR), Mineo , Palagonia , Scordia and Vizzini .

history

Militello was founded in Byzantine times . In 1693 the place was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in the same place in the style of the Sicilian Baroque .
