Scicli [ ˈʃiːkli ] is an Italian municipality in the Ragusa Free Community Consortium in the autonomous region of Sicily with 26,837 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Scicli is one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Situation and facts

The city lies at an altitude of 106  m slm and 25 km south of Ragusa . The districts are Donnalucata, Scicli, Sampieri and Cava d'Aliga. The neighboring municipalities are Modica and Ragusa.

history

The place was founded by the Sikels . In the Middle Ages it came under Arab rule until it developed into a royal city under the Normans . Under Frederick II , the city was owned by the Counts of Modica. In 1693 the city was destroyed by an earthquake, like the entire Val di Noto . It was then rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style.

economy

The main industry is agriculture . Fruit and vegetables are grown on a large scale , including in greenhouses . Scicli there are chemical industries , the plastics and insecticides produce.

Events

  • In March the “Ride of San Giuseppe”, a torchlight procession, takes place.
  • In May there is the "Feast of the Madonna delle Milizie", a costume festival in honor of the Madonna delle Milizie, which commemorates the battle of the Saracens and the Normans.

Trivia

The town hall ( Palazzo di Città , also called Municipio ) on Piazza Municipio, built in the early years of the 20th century in the neo-renaissance style, is used in the film adaptations of the Montalbano crime novels by Andrea Camilleri as the office of Commissioner Salvo Montalbano .
