Ispica is an Italian municipality in the Ragusa municipality in the autonomous region of Sicily with 16,334 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Ispica is located 35 kilometers southwest of Ragusa on the Ispica River on an area of 113.5 km². The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in the food processing industry in canning factories.
Ispica is on the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line .
The neighboring municipalities are Modica , Noto ( SR ), Pachino (SR), Pozzallo and Rosolini (SR).
history
The area around Ispica was already inhabited by people in prehistoric times. This testifies u. a. the Tomba del Principe in a Bronze Age necropolis in the Cava d'Ispica . In the Middle Ages there was a place that the Normans expanded. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt on the same site. Until 1935 the city was called Spaccaforno.
