Vittoria is a town in Ragusa consortium of municipalities outside in the region of Sicily in Italy with 63,740 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Vittoria is located on the southern foothills of the Monti Iblei at an altitude of 168  m slm , 28 km west of Ragusa . Viticulture has a long tradition in Vittoria. With the construction of greenhouses , the production of vegetables and fruits has gained in importance.

Vittoria is on the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line .

The neighboring municipalities are Acate , Chiaramonte Gulfi , Comiso and Ragusa .

history

On April 24, 1607, the community was founded by Countess Vittoria Colonna, daughter of the Spanish viceroy Marcantonio Colonna . In 1693 the city was badly damaged by an earthquake and then rebuilt in a strictly geometrical manner.

Jazz festival

Since 2008 the Vittoria Jazz Festivali has been taking place for two weeks in June, sponsored by the city of Vittoria and the Sicily Jazz Music Association. The musical director is the Vittoria-born alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso (* 1989). Here were, among others, Stefano Bollani , Aldo Romano , Andrew McCormack , Marzio Scholten , Enzo Zirilli , bassist Nello Toscano and Carlo Cattano on. The events are free. Wine tastings (red wine Cerasuolo di Vittoria ) are often combined with the concerts, which often take place in the open air in squares around the city. There are jazz workshops and a young talent competition sponsored by the local Rotary Club.
