Marcantonio Colonna (Admiral)
Marcantonio Colonna (born February 26, 1535 in Civita Lavinia , † August 1, 1584 in Medinaceli ) was an admiral and viceroy of Sicily from the Italian noble family of Colonna .
He came from Pope Pius IV. Banished from Rome, Spanish services and directed by Alba's operations against the command 1556 Papal State with so much success that they called him back to Rome. In 1571 Pius V entrusted him with the expedition equipped against the Turks , which united with the Spanish one under Juan de Austria . He helped win the battle of Lepanto and received a triumph celebrated in the ancient Roman way on his return . He then administered Sicily as the Spanish viceroy and was about to take over the command of the Armada when he died in Medinaceli on August 1, 1584. While reigning in Sicily, he fell in love with the married baroness Eufrosia Siracusa Valdaura , wife of Calcerano Corbera. He had her father-in-law and husband murdered. This story has been immortalized by a number of writers, including Leonardo Sciascia .
