The pygmy owl ( Glaucidium ) are a genus of authentics owl (Strigidae). The genus contains about 30 species that are distributed worldwide. They are mostly small owls. Most pygmy owl species are nocturnal and primarily hunt large insects and other small prey. Only the pygmy owl ( Glaucidium passerinum ) that gives it its name lives in Central Europe .
