The chestnut pygmy owl ( Glaucidium castaneum , Syn . : Taenioglaux castaneum ) is a species of bird from the family of real owls (Strigidae).

Some authors assign this species, together with others, to the genus Taenioglaux .

The species seems to be closely related to the Albert pygmy owl ( Glaucidium albertinum ) and the Cape pygmy owl ( Glaucidium capense ), with which it is sometimes viewed as conspecific , according to Stevenson and IOC World Bird List.

The subspecies Glaucidium capense etchecopari is listed by Avibase as a subspecies of the chestnut pygmy owl Glaucidium castaneum etchecopari .

The chestnut pygmy owl occurs in the Mitumba Mountains in Africa , in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Ivory Coast , Cameroon , Liberia and Uganda .

The distribution area includes humid lowland rainforest and mountain forest at 1000 to 1700 m altitude.

description

The chestnut pygmy owl is 20 to 21 cm tall, weighs about 100 g, the wingspan is 128 to 139 mm. It looks very similar to the Cape pygmy owl, but the back is a solid red-brown without stripes. The face is pale with white “eyebrows”, yellow irises, the head is dark brown with yellowish stripes.

The call of the male is described as a series of whistling, accelerating "kyurr-kyurr-kyurr" tones.

Way of life

The food consists of small vertebrates and large insects , and the hunt is usually from a hide.

No information is available on the breeding season.

The chestnut pygmy owl is not considered endangered ( least concern ).
