The Yungas pygmy owl ( Glaucidium bolivianum ) is a small species of pygmy owl . It occurs exclusively in South America.

Appearance

The Yungas pygmy owl reaches a height of about 16 centimeters. Feather ears are missing. The species occurs in a gray, brown and red-brown color morph. The occipital face is noticeable. The vertex is dense whitish mottled and occasionally has a few elongated spots. The back is also densely spotted. The underside of the body is whitish with dark spots on the upper chest. The flanks and sides of the chest are darkly striped lengthways on the side. The eyes are yellowish.

The Yungas pygmy owl is very similar to the Andean pygmy owl , but has elongated wing tips and a significantly shorter tail. The Parker Pygmy Owl is smaller with a shorter tail. The Brazilian pygmy owl is usually larger than the Yungas pygmy owl.

Distribution area and habitat

The Yungas pygmy owl occurs predominantly on the eastern slopes of the Andes - from northern Peru to Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is a resident bird that inhabits humid and seasonally humid mountain and cloud forests, which are rich in epiphytes and lianas. The altitude distribution ranges from around 1,000 to 3,000 meters. It is most widespread in dense cloud forests.

Way of life

The Yungas pygmy owl is less diurnal than other American pygmy owl species. Its activity phase usually begins at dusk. The food spectrum consists mainly of insects and small birds and probably other small vertebrates as well. The territory of the Yungas pygmy owls is between 0.5 and 1 square kilometer. Almost nothing is known about the breeding biology.
