Friedrich Boie

Friedrich Boie (born June 4, 1789 in Meldorf , Schleswig-Holstein , † March 3, 1870 in Kiel ) was a German lawyer , ornithologist and entomologist .

Live and act

Friedrich Boie was the brother of the herpetologist Heinrich Boie . His father was the poet Heinrich Christian Boie . He studied law and worked as a legal advisor and court holder for various goods in Holstein, including Bockhorn, Bothkamp, ​​Depenau and Schönböcken, Waterneverstorf Bossee, Klein Königsförde, Deutsch-Nienhof, Klein-Nordsee, Oppendorf, Pohlsee and Westensee.

After the early death of his brother Heinrich on Java , Friedrich managed his estate and published Heinrich Boie's letters in which he had described many new species of reptiles and amphibians. Friedrich Boie regularly wrote scientific articles in the encyclopedic newspaper Isis by Lorenz Oken , including remarks on Merrem's attempt at a system of amphibians published in 1827.

On August 24, 1860, Friedrich Boie was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Among the genera and species that Boie first described, count the little owls ( Athene ), the diving ducks Genus Aythya that Mennigvögel ( Pericrocotus ), the Little Tern Noddi or Weißkopfnoddi ( Anous minutus ) and the Round Island Burrowing Boa ( Bolyeria multocarinata ).
