Chiaramonte Gulfi is a municipality in the Ragusa Free Municipal Consortium in the Sicily region in Italy with 8084 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Chiaramonte Gulfi is located 15 kilometers north of Ragusa in the Monti Iblei . The highest point in the community is Monte Arcibessi with a height of 906  m slm

The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture. Other jobs can be found in the handicrafts, especially in marble processing and art blacksmithing. The municipality is particularly known for its pork specialties.

The neighboring municipalities are Acate , Comiso , Licodia Eubea ( CT ), Mazzarrone (CT), Monterosso Almo , Ragusa and Vittoria .

The Chiaramonte Gulfi station was on the narrow-gauge railway line Syracuse – Ragusa .

history

Bronze Age settlements have been found in the area of ​​Chiaramonte Gulfi . In the 8th century BC There was a Siculian settlement here.

The present place was founded at the beginning of the 14th century by the Chiaramonte family. People settled in the ancient Gulfi, which lay at the foot of Monte Arcibessi and had been destroyed by the French on the occasion of the Sicilian Vespers .

In the 16th century, Chiaramonte Gulfi was a strategically important place. However, it lost this importance to the city of Vittoria in the 18th century .

In the devastating earthquake in south-east Sicily in 1693, Chiaramonte Gulfi was largely destroyed and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century .

Attractions

Only remains of the medieval city wall and the Chiaramonte castle are preserved.

Churches worth seeing are the Chiesa Santa Maria la Nova from 1536, which has since been rebuilt several times, the Chiesa Madonna del Gesu and the monastery in the old town, the Chiesa San Salvatore and the Chiesa San Filippo from the 17th century and the Chiesa San Giovanni Battista , which was rebuilt in baroque style after the earthquake in 1693. Events

Every year in February, the Sagra della salsiccia festival takes place in honor of the sausage specialties produced in the region. On the last weekend in August, the Festa di San Vito Compatrono della Città is held in honor of the patron saint of the community.
