Pozzallo is a town in Ragusa consortium of municipalities outside in the region of Sicily in Italy with 19,351 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Pozzallo is located 30 km southeast of Ragusa directly on the Mediterranean coast . The inhabitants work in agriculture (cultivation of carob and vegetables), in industry, in fishing or in shipping.

The neighboring municipalities are Ispica and Modica .

history

The fishing village developed into a town around a tower. Since the 15th century it has been recorded on ship maps, the name means fountain by the sea . Merchant ships docked here to bring fresh water on board. In 1829 the community became independent. Today Pozzallo is known for the thousands of migrants from North Africa ( Libya , Tunisia and Egypt ) who are found dead here or who go ashore, are cared for and seek asylum in Europe.

Pozzallo train station on the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line is the southernmost passenger train station in Italy. The travel time to Ragusa is around 1 hour, to Syracuse around 1 hour and 10 minutes.
