Comiso is a municipality in Ragusa consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 31,107 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Chiesa Madre

Comiso is 22 kilometers west of Ragusa in southern Sicily. The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture (wine and vegetables) and in handicrafts (blacksmithing, carpentry and marble processing).

The districts are Comiso, Pedalino and Quaglio.

The neighboring municipalities are Chiaramonte Gulfi , Ragusa and Vittoria .

Comiso has a train station on the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line .

history

In ancient times Comiso ( Greek Kasmenai ) was a Greek colony . The city was founded in 642 BC. Founded by Syracusans , 212 BC. BC it was destroyed by the Romans . In 1693 the city was badly damaged in an earthquake . Comiso was rebuilt in the same place. From 1983 NATO stationed cruise missiles at what is now Comiso Airport , which were later withdrawn as a result of the INF treaty .
