Life

Bufalino studied literature . During the Second World War he fell ill with tuberculosis and spent several years in a sanatorium . He then worked as a teacher of Italian and Latin and devoted himself to writing. However, it was not until 1981, at the instigation of his friend Leonardo Sciascia, that the first work Diceria dell'untore (The Pest House ) was published, which received an award that same year. The novel is set shortly after the Second World War in a Sicilian tuberculosis sanatorium. The focus is on the narrator and the terminally ill Marta. From the publication of the novel until his death, Bufalino published novels, short stories, plays, poems, aphorisms, essays, anthologies and various texts about his Sicilian homeland.

In 1996, Bufalino was killed in a car accident near his hometown Comiso.
