Belpasso is a city in the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily in Italy with 28,072 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Belpasso is 22 kilometers northwest of Catania on the southern slope of Mount Etna . The residents work mainly in agriculture and industry. The place is connected to the Ferrovia Circumetnea , the Etna circular railway, and offers itself as a starting point for trips to Etna.

The neighboring municipalities are Adrano , Biancavilla , Bronte , Camporotondo Etneo , Castiglione di Sicilia , Catania , Lentini ( SR ), Maletto , Mascalucia , Motta Sant'Anastasia , Nicolosi , Paternò , Ragalna , Ramacca , Randazzo , San Pietro Clarenza , Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea .

history

The church

The year of foundation is unknown, the city was called Malpasso in ancient times. The city was destroyed in the Etna eruption in 1669 and rebuilt further down the Etna as Fenicia Moncada. The city was destroyed again in the earthquake in 1693. The city was rebuilt in the same place in the pattern of a chess board with the current name.

Attractions

The church of Santa Lucia was built by Giovanni Bellia. Other attractions include the Bufali Palace and the 18th century Scrofani Palace.

Since 1987 the Nino Martoglio International Book Award , a literary prize for Sicilian writers , has been presented in Belpasso . To date, awards include Giuseppe Bonaviri (1989), Gesualdo Bufalino (1990), Andrea Camilleri (1998) and Vincenzo Consolo (1999).
