Mascali is a city in the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy with 14,429 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Mascali is 34 kilometers north of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in paper mills.

The place is connected to the Ferrovia Circumetnea .

The neighboring municipalities are: Fiumefreddo di Sicilia , Giarre , Piedimonte Etneo , Riposto and Sant'Alfio .

history

The place originated in the Middle Ages. In 1928 Mascali was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Etna. It was then rebuilt in a safe place. The railway station of the Ferrovia Circumetnea is therefore far outside the village.
