Mineo is a city in the metropolitan city of Catania in the Sicily region in Italy with 5251 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Mineo is 66 km southwest of Catania . The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture, animal husbandry or the furniture industry.
The neighboring municipalities are Aidone ( EN ), Caltagirone , Grammichele , Licodia Eubea , Militello in Val di Catania , Palagonia , Piazza Armerina ( EN ), Ramacca and Vizzini .
history
Mineo's origins go back to the 5th century BC. BC back. In Arab times the place was expanded into a fortress.
Attractions
The church of Sant'Agrippina originally dates from the 14th century, the interior from the 18th century. Inside there is a nativity scene that dates back to the 18th century. The Church of San Pietro was built in the 17th century. Inside there is a wooden figure of Christ. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the 11th century, but was reconstructed in the 18th century. Inside there is an organ from the 18th century.

- Duketios , a Sikeler leader who lived in the 5th century BC. Who led an uprising against the Greeks came from Mineo.
- The writer Luigi Capuana was born in Mineo on May 28, 1839 and died in Catania on November 29, 1925. He was a representative of Italian verism . The house where he was born can be visited in Mineo.
- Alois Ricceri , SDB, Italian Luigi was born on May 8, 1901 in Mineo and died on June 15, 1989 in Castellammare di Stabia. He was an Italian Salesian of Don Bosco and from 1965 to 1977 the seventh superior general of the congregation and thus the sixth successor of Don Bosco.
- The writer Giuseppe Bonaviri was born on July 11, 1924 in Mineo; He died on March 21, 2009 in Frosinone (Lazio). In 2000 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
