Maletto is a city of the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy with 3697 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Maletto is located 60 km northeast of Catania on the northeast slope of Mount Etna . In relation to the settlement core, Maletto is one of the highest places in Sicily and the highest place on Mount Etna. However, the municipal territories of most of the municipalities on the slopes of Etna extend to the summit.
The residents mainly work in agriculture and animal husbandry.
The neighboring municipalities are Adrano , Belpasso , Biancavilla , Bronte , Castiglione di Sicilia , Nicolosi , Randazzo , Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea .
history
Maletto was founded in 1263 by Manfredi Maletto, the Count of Mineo. In the years 1440 and in the 17th century the place was repopulated after it had been abandoned.
Attractions
The parish church was built in 1870. The church is dedicated to Saint Sant'Antonio da Padova. The churches of San Michele and Sant'Antonio Abbate date from the 18th century. In the village there is a ruin of an old castle.
Events
Maletto is known for its strawberry cultivation. Every year the “Sagra delle Fragola” (literally “Strawberry Festival” ) takes place, to which thousands of visitors flock to the village. A giant strawberry cake is made for this event and distributed to the festival visitors.
