Castiglione di Sicilia ( Sicilian : Castigghiuni di Sicilia ) is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Catania in the autonomous region of Sicily with 3082 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy ).
Location and dates
Castiglione di Sicilia is 56 kilometers north of Catania on the northern slope of Mount Etna . The residents work mainly in agriculture and industry. In addition, Castiglione di Sicilia is known for its embroidery.
The neighboring communities are Adrano , Belpasso , Biancavilla , Bronte , Calatabiano , Francavilla di Sicilia ( ME ), Gaggi ( ME ), Graniti ( ME ), Linguaglossa , Maletto , Malvagna ( ME ), Mojo Alcantara ( ME ), Motta Camastra ( ME ) , Nicolosi , Piedimonte Etneo , Randazzo , Roccella Valdemone ( ME ), Sant'Alfio , Taormina ( ME ) and Zafferana Etnea .
history
In 496 BC The city was founded by displaced residents from Naxos . It was a Greek colony, later an Arab fortress and, in the early Middle Ages, the royal city of the Normans .
On August 12, 1943, soldiers of the Parachute Panzer Division 1 Hermann Göring carried out a massacre of the town's civilian population, presumably after a minor incident without deaths the night before in the neighboring town of Cesarò . The incident was described by Leonardo Sciascia , among others . A plaque on the town hall of Castiglione di Sicilia commemorates the 16 dead.
Attractions
The ruins of the medieval castle are worth seeing in the place, these ruins still shape the cityscape today. The Church of San Pietro e Paolo is the parish church. It is located near the Piazza del Municipio. The church dates from Norman times, remnants of the outer wall can still be seen. The bell tower dates from 1709. Not far from the church of San Pietro is the church of San Benedetto with a picture of the Madonna and Child from the 18th century.
The baroque Palazzo Camardi and the church of Sant'Antonio from the 18th century are located on Piazza Sant'Antonio . Inside the church, marble inlays and a marble altar can be seen. The 18th century church of Sant'Antonio Abbate is in Via Catena. The floor plan has the shape of a Greek cross.
The Santa Domenica Church is near the Alcantara River . The church dates back to Byzantine times and has a square plan with a false dome. In the direction of Francavilla di Sicilia stands the 14th century church of San Nicola.
