Nicolosi is a city in the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy with 7551 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Nicolosi is 16 kilometers north of Catania . The residents mainly work in agriculture and tourism.

The neighboring municipalities are Adrano , Belpasso , Biancavilla , Bronte , Castiglione di Sicilia , Maletto , Mascalucia , Pedara , Randazzo , Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea .

history

In the 12th century the monastery of San Nicolo l'Arena was built. The place Nicolosi developed in the vicinity. The place was destroyed several times by eruptions of Mount Etna , so in the years 1669 and 1693. In 1886 the lava flow stopped shortly before the place. The Archbishop has in this outbreak the veil of St. Agatha of Catania the lava flow asserted.
