The Rifugio Sapienza (completely: Rifugio Giovanni Sapienza , also Rifugio Giovannino Sapienza ) is a refuge of the Etna section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). It is located on the southern slope of the Sicilian volcano Etna at an altitude of 1910 meters. The hut, built in the 1930s, has been renovated several times and now resembles a hotel with a bar, restaurant and pizzeria. Next to the Rifugio there are parking spaces for cars and coaches, souvenir shops and the valley station of the Funivia dell'Etna .
The area around the station is characterized by cooled lava flows on which the vegetation has so far barely gained a foothold. The last lava flows so far destroyed large parts of the station and the cable car facilities in 2001 and 2002, which were later rebuilt.
The rifugio can be reached with normal cars and buses via the provincial road SP 92 through the villages of Zafferana Etnea , Monterosso Almo , Trecastagni , Nicolosi , Pedara or Ragalna . The natural road, which then leads to the mountain station of the cable car, is closed to normal traffic and is only used by all-terrain minibuses and other vehicles from a local company. The minibuses allow tourists to get to the mountain station when the cable car is not in operation. If weather, snow conditions and volcanic activity permit, the minibuses can continue towards the summit crater up to an altitude of 2,900 m.
In the immediate vicinity of the station there are two inactive side craters of Etna, which can be easily hiked on foot (see Silvestri Mountains ).
