Zafferana Etnea is a town and municipality in the metropolitan city of Catania in the Sicily region in Italy with 9521 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Zafferana Etnea is located 28 kilometers north of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna . The inhabitants mainly work in the timber trade, tourism and agriculture.
The neighboring municipalities are Aci Sant'Antonio , Acireale , Adrano , Belpasso , Biancavilla , Bronte , Castiglione di Sicilia , Giarre , Maletto , Milo , Nicolosi , Pedara , Randazzo , Sant'Alfio , Santa Venerina , Trecastagni and Viagrande .
history
The place was founded in 1387 in the vicinity of the priory of San Giovanni. In the past, lava flows from the eastern crater of Mount Etna destroyed the place. In 1852 and 1992 the lava flow stopped just a few hundred meters from the site.
