Calatabiano is 44 km north of Catania on the northeastern slope of Mount Etna . Most of the residents work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Castiglione di Sicilia , Fiumefreddo di Sicilia , Giardini-Naxos , Linguaglossa , Piedimonte Etneo and Taormina .

history

The Arabs built a castle here during their rule in Sicily. The place name, which means Castle of Biano, is also derived from Arabic. The place developed around the castle and played a strategically important role as it dominated the valley of the Alcantara river .
