Aci Castello is a town and municipality of the Metropolitan city of Catania in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 18,310 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Aci Castello is 9 km northeast of Catania on the Mediterranean coast . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and industry in Catania.

The districts are Aci Trezza , Ficarazzi and Cannizzaro.

The neighboring municipalities are Aci Catena , Acireale , Catania , San Gregorio di Catania and Valverde .

history

The village of Aci Castello developed around a fort that was built by the Normans in 1076 . At that time it was still on a small, rocky island. From 1169 onwards, Aci Castello grew, as an eruption of Mount Etna destroyed the surrounding places on the mainland and their inhabitants sought refuge on the island. Underwater volcanic eruptions have raised the coast by 17 meters since the Middle Ages and the fort is now on the mainland.
