Santa Venerina is a town and municipality of the Metropolitan city of Catania in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 8547 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Santa Venerina is located 31 kilometers north of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in the production of spirits , including liqueurs .

The neighboring communities are Acireale , Giarre and Zafferana Etnea .

history

The discovery of some gold and silver coins have shown that the place was already inhabited in Roman times. The Church of Santo Stefano was built in the Byzantine era with a three-choir system. Under the rule of the Normans (1064 to 1194) the monks of the Benedictine order came to Santa Venerina. The name Santa Venerina is attested from documents from the 14th century.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Santa Venera consecrated in 1749. In 1754 the church was enlarged with four side chapels. The painter Alessandro Vasta from Acireale made the frescoes in this church. The church tower fell victim to the subsequent earthquakes and is now made of concrete and steel.
  • Church del Sacro Cuore (Holy Heart), built in the classical style between 1875 and 1878 by Giovanni Privitera
