Acireale is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Catania in the autonomous region of Sicily with 51,876 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Acireale is located 20 kilometers north of Catania , there are jobs in the production of food, in tourism and in quarries.
Acireale has a motorway connection to the A18 / E45 . Acireale station is on the Messina – Siracusa line .
The districts ( fractions ) are Santa Maria La Scala, Santa Tecla, Stazzo, SMAmmalati, Guardia, Mangano, Capomulini, S.Cosmo, Balatelle, Pennisi, Fiandaca, Loreto, Piano d'Api, Aciplatani, Scillichenti, S.Caterina, SMdelle Grazie, SMla Stella and SGBosco.
The neighboring municipalities are Aci Castello , Aci Catena , Aci Sant'Antonio , Giarre , Riposto , Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea .
history
The community was created in the 14th century by the influx of residents from the coastal towns, as the location of the place offered better protection from pirate attacks. In the area of today's city stood the 731 BC. The Greek city of Xiphonia founded in BC. The name Acireale was given in 1642 by Philip IV, King of Spain . The city was destroyed in the earthquake in 1693 and then rebuilt.
On June 27, 1844, the diocese Acireale was by Pope Gregory XVI. built.
In the first decades of the 20th century, the city experienced strong growth.
Culture
Along with Sciacca, Acireale is the carnival stronghold of Sicily and the cradle of the Sicilian puppet theater .

- Cathedral Maria SS. Annunziata , built between 1597 and 1618, shows a baroque portal and a Gothic facade
- San Sebastiano Church, built in the second half of the 17th century
- Church dei Santi Pietro e Paolo with a column facade from the 18th century in the Piazza Duomo

- Pinacoteca Zelantea, with old writings and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries

Surroundings
- San Giovanni Montebello, a small village 4 km from Acireale. Here is the church of SS. Ritrovato with two paintings from 1833, the Annunciation and the Crucifixion. The paintings are by Giuseppe Zacco .
