Acireale Cathedral

The cathedral Maria Santissima Annunziata in Acireale is the cathedral of the diocese of Acireale , a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Catania in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily of the Roman Catholic Church .

The church was built as a parish church between 1597 and 1618 and was renovated in the 18th century. The neo-Gothic facade (around 1900) is based on a design by Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile . The baroque portal was preserved.

The three-aisled church still shows the concept of the late renaissance , which was redesigned with baroque chapels and furnishings. A chapel from the 17th century is dedicated to St. Venera . The church has been a cathedral since 1844.

The meridian of the astronomer Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters was inserted into the floor of the cathedral, who shows numerous geographical and astronomical measurements from Peters' geodetic work as well as his biographical data in a long row of colored floor tiles .
