Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile (born August 8, 1825 in Palermo ; † June 16, 1891 ibid) was an Italian architect and landscape architect . His works can be found all over Sicily . He was the father of the architect Ernesto Basile .

Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile studied architecture at the University of Palermo . After the laurea in 1846 he was given the opportunity to continue his education in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca and at the Sapienza . In 1848 he participated as a builder for military installations in the uprising of Palermo, which for a short time led to an independent Sicily under Ruggero Settimo , in 1860 he was one of Garibaldi's supporters . From 1863 to 1870 he was the head of the City of Palermo Building Department. In 1863 he was also appointed professor for architettura decorativa e composizione at the University of Palermo. He was a commendatoreof the Order of the Crown of Italy and the Order of Knights of Saints Mauritius and Lazarus .

It was classically oriented, but also used stylistic elements from other epochs. The plans for the cemeteries in Caltagirone and Monreale in 1853 show inspiration from the Norman-Sicilian architecture. Basile conducted extensive studies on the Corinthian order , which he realized in the Teatro Massimo , his masterpiece. However, he died before the work was completed, so that his son Ernsto Basile completed the construction of the opera in 1897. He submitted the design for the competition in 1864, and in 1868 he was awarded the first prize. The construction work began in 1875, local intrigues led to interruptions, so that it was not until 1890 that construction could be continued, albeit not without further disruptions.

Other works by him are the facade of the Cathedral of Acireale , Villino Favaloro (1881–1891), Villa Vittorio Emanuele in Caltagirone and the facade of the Italian pavilion at the Paris World Exhibition in 1878 .

As a garden architect , he designed the Giardino Inglese on Via Libertà and the Giardino Garibaldi on Piazza Marina in Palermo and the English Garden in Caltagirone, based on the current style of natural gardens .

He wrote various works on architecture.
