Ernesto Basile (born January 31, 1857 in Palermo ; † August 26, 1932 there ) was an Italian Art Nouveau architect .

biography

Basile was born the son of the architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile . He studied with his father at the University of Palermo , whose assistant he became after the laurea in 1878. From 1881 to 1890 he was Enrico Guy's assistant at the University of Rome , where he obtained the libera docenza (habilitation) in 1883 . He took over his father's architecture chair in Palermo in 1890. In 1888 the Brazilian government commissioned him with planning in Rio de Janeiro . Basile was Grand'Ufficiale of the Order of the Crown of Italy and commendatore of the Knightly Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus . Many of his buildings, mainly palaces and villas in Art Nouveau style, are located in Sicily .

Buildings in Palermo

The Teatro Massimo in Palermo is one of the most famous buildings . Construction began in 1875 under the direction of the father and was completed by Basile after his death in 1897.

Also in Palermo are the villas Villino Florio , built 1899–1902, Villino Ida ed Ernesto Basile , built 1903–1904 as a residence for the family, Villa dei Principi Deliella , built 1905–1907, and the church Chiesa di Santa Rosalia, built in 1928.
