Canicatti

Canicattì [kanikatˈti] is a city in the Free Community Consortium of Agrigento in the region of Sicily in Italy with 35,530 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Canicattì is 33 km southwest of Caltanissetta and 33 km east of Agrigento . The main industries are agriculture and the service industry.

The neighboring municipalities are Caltanissetta ( CL ), Castrofilippo , Delia (CL), Montedoro (CL), Naro , Racalmuto and Serradifalco (CL).

history

The original name al-Quatah comes from Arabic. During this time the place was an important fortress. It later became feudal property of the Palmeri family, the De Crescenzi family and, from 1507 to 1819, the Bonanno family.

During the Second World War the Canicattì massacre took place in the city . American soldiers had captured the city and after the capture shot eight unarmed Italian civilians. Lieutenant Colonel Herbert McCaffrey , military governor of Palermo , learned that civilians were about to ransack a factory. He drove to the factory with a patrol from the military police and fired at the crowd when the crowd refused to disband
