Caltabellotta is an Italian municipality in the free municipal consortium of Agrigento in the autonomous region of Sicily with 3420 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Caltabellotta is 63 km north-west of Agrigento at an altitude of 949 m. Agriculture is the city's main industry. Produced olives , wine and citrus fruits.

The neighboring municipalities of Caltabellotta are Bisacquino ( PA ), Burgio , Calamonaci , Chiusa Sclafani (PA), Giuliana (PA), Ribera , Sambuca di Sicilia , Sciacca and Villafranca Sicula .

The district of Sant'Anna is located southeast of Caltabellotta.

history

The Siculian city ​​of Triocala was located here in ancient times. The city was one of the main places of the slaves . Later the city was destroyed by the Romans. The Arabs founded a new city and named itقلعة البلوط / Qalʿat al-Ballūṭ  / 'oak castle ' ( qalʿa Arabic for “rock” and “castle”; ballūṭ Arabic for the green oak Quercus baloot ).

When the Roman-German Emperor Heinrich VI. of the death of Tankreds († February 20, 1194), King of the Kingdom of Sicily , learned, he moved with a large army to Italy. With little resistance he occupied Naples in August 1194 and subjugated Sicily in November of the same year. Sibylle von Acerra , the widow of Tankred, sought protection with her children in the citadel of Caltabellotta. Henry VI. offered Sibylle the county of Lecce and Wilhelm III for the renunciation of the kingdom . the principality of Taranto , which was accepted by Sybille and confirmed by Heinrich in the agreement of Caltabellotta in December 1194.

The peace between the Spanish Aragon and the French Anjou was concluded in Caltabellotta on April 19, 1288 . After the Sicilian Vespers , at which Anjou lost Sicily, Anjou renounced Sicily in the Peace of Caltabellotta in 1302 .

In 2010 Nicolo Cottone from Solingen was appointed ambassador for Caltabellotta.
