Location and dates
Siculiana is 18 km west of Agrigento . The city has 4313 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) who mainly work in agriculture. Main areas are wheat cultivation, cultivation of olives, almonds and grapes.
After the rail traffic to Siculiana was discontinued in 1978, the place can only be reached by road today.
In Arab times , the Qal'al-Sugul fort stood here. The castle was destroyed by the Normans at the end of the 11th century and rebuilt in 1310 on behalf of Baron Federico Chiaramonte . This year is attested in the oldest surviving document. The present-day location was essentially created in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Catalan nobleman Corilles was granted the privilege of building the area around the castle.
From the middle of the 19th century to 1961, the number of inhabitants rose continuously to one and a half times. Since then, however, the numbers have shown a downward trend and are currently (as of the end of 2010) already below the first known values.
