Santa Elisabetta is a town in the municipality of Agrigento consortium outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Santa Elisabetta is located 21 km north of Agrigento inland. 2267 inhabitants live here (as of December 31, 2019) who mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Aragona , Joppolo Giancaxio , Raffadali and Sant'Angelo Muxaro .

history

The current city was founded in 1620 and was a district of Aragona until the municipality became independent in 1955. Due to the high unemployment, many residents of Santa Elisabetta emigrated. Until the Second World War , residents of Santa Elisabetta emigrated mainly to North and South America. From 1950 onwards there was a great wave of emigration to Germany, Belgium and France, which lasted until the late 1970s.
