history

The remains of Greek, Roman and Arab settlements have been found on the island of Lampedusa. In 1843 the island was systematically settled by Bernado Maria Sanvisente, an envoy from Ferdinand II . Linosa Island was settled in 1845.

Already in 2007 and as a result of the political changes in Tunisia and Libya from January 2011, many people tried to cross the 150 km from the coast of Tunisia from North Africa to Lampedusa.

In October 2013 there was a high number of fatalities among the boat fugitives when a ship wrecked on October 3 ; Subsequently, other arriving refugee boats also moved into the media's attention. Italy's Prime Minister Enrico Letta announced a state funeral for the refugees on October 9, but it did not take place. The President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso announced that the EU would support Italy with 30 million euros in dealing with the stricken refugees. In Italy, the Bossi Fini law was also discussed, under which illegal immigration is punished with imprisonment.

Attractions

The marine fauna and the African flora of the islands are worth seeing. Some of the sandy beaches are used by the hawksbill sea turtle to lay their eggs, which is why these areas were placed under nature protection in October 2002.

On July 2, 2004, the Italian Republic awarded the municipality of Lampedusa e Linosa the Gold Medal for Civil Service ( Medaglia d'oro al merito civile ).
