Sambuca di Sicilia is an Italian municipality in the consortium of municipalities Agrigento outdoors in the autonomous region of Sicily . Until 1928 the place was called Sambuca Zabut and received the current name under Mussolini as part of the Italianization of the place names.

Sambuca di Sicilia is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Location and dates

Sambuca di Sicilia is 55 kilometers northwest of Agrigento . The city has 5680 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), who are mainly employed in agriculture.

Sambuca di Sicilia, together with the municipalities of Menfi , Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca, forms a common wine-growing region. Since 1995 there has been a controlled designation of origin for quality wine ( Denominazione di origine controllata ) for the vineyards around the Lago Arancio reservoir with the "DOC Sambuca di Sicilia" .

The neighboring municipalities are Bisacquino ( PA ), Caltabellotta , Contessa Entellina (PA), Giuliana (PA), Menfi , Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca .

Sambuca di Sicilia belongs to the association “I Borghi più belli d'Italia” I borghi più belli d'Italia (in German: the most beautiful villages in Italy) and was awarded the title “Borgo di Borghi” as the most beautiful village in Italy in 2016.

history

There was already a settlement called Rahl Zabùt in Arab times . In 1185 it became the property of the Monreale Monastery .

Attractions

The Islamic structure can still be seen in the old town. It consists of winding streets and closed courtyards. In the 16th and 17th centuries the structure was changed and important structures were built.

The parish church of Maria SS. Assunta was built in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the 17th century. The facade is characterized by a large square tower. The college church dates from the 18th century.

In Via Marconi there is the 14th century Church of the Conception with a portal from the time the church was built. In the Piazza della Vittoria stands the Carmine Church from the 16th century; the stucco work inside is from the 19th century. Inside there is also a marble statue of the Madonna dell'Udienza by Antonello Gagini .

Next to the church is the town hall. The Panitteri Palace with elements from the late Renaissance stands in Piazza Navarro from the 16th century; Today you can visit the Ethno - Anthropological Museum here .

The municipal theater was rebuilt with the latest technology after the earthquake in 1968. It was originally built in the style of the theaters in Palermo and Catania .
