Additional signal
An additional signal is a signal on a railway line that provides the driver with additional information about the line ahead that cannot be transmitted by a main signal alone.
Validity according to Ril. 301.0301: Additional signals apply to train journeys . The signal Zs 103 (DV 301) is only valid for shunting trips. Fixed additional signals are usually shown on main or distant signals. The signals Zs 2, Zs 2v, Zs 3, Zs 3v, Zs 6, and Zs 10 (DS 301) can be shown alone.
Additional signals
The following signals are used in Railway Signaling Regulations (ESO), Directive 301 (updated December 10, 2017).
designation | Signal aspect | meaning | image | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Zs 1 - substitute signal | Three white lights in the shape of an A or one white flashing light . | Drive past the signal Hp 0 or the disturbed main light signal without a written command . | ![]() |

Zs 2 - direction indicator | A glowing white letter. | The route leads in the direction shown. | ||||||
Zs 2v - direction indicator | A glowing yellow letter. In the area of application of DV 301, the direction indicator may also be glowing white until further notice. | Expect direction indicators (Zs 2). | ||||||
Zs 3 - speed indicator |
Form signal: A white number on a triangular black board with a white border. The table is usually on the top; if space is limited, the tip can point upwards. Light signal: A white glowing code number. The code number shown means that 10 times the value in km / h is permitted as driving speed. |
The speed indicated by the code number must not be exceeded from the signal in the subsequent turnout area . | ![]() |

Zs 3v - speed indicator |
A flashing yellow code number. Light signal: The code number shown means that 10 times the value in km / h is permitted as driving speed. Form signal: A yellow number on a triangular black board with a yellow border. The shape signal is reflective. |
Expect speed indicator (Zs 3). | ![]() |

Zs 6 - counter track indicator |
Light signal: A white glowing oblique light strip, the ends of which are usually bent vertically up and down. DV 301: The ends cannot be angled until further notice. Shape signal: A rectangular black disc with a white border and a white stripe rising from right to left, the ends of which are angled vertically. The shape signal is reflective. |
The route leads into the main track against the normal direction of travel. |

Zs 7 - warning signal | Three yellow lights in the form of a V . | Drive past the Hp 0 signal or the disturbed main light signal without a written command! Continue on sight. | ||||||
Zs 8 - replacement signal on opposite track run | Three flashing white lights in the shape of an A or a white flashing strip of light rising from right to left | Drive past the main signal that is showing a stop or is disturbed, the route leads into the main track against the normal direction of travel. | ||||||
Zs 9 - level crossing board (level crossing board) (DV 301) | A triangular white board with a red border and a black gate. | After the admissible drive past the stop showing or disrupted main light signal stop in front of the level crossing ! Continue after securing. | ||||||
Zs 10 - end signal (DS 301) |
Form signal: A white arrow with the point upwards on an arrow-shaped black board. Light signal: A white glowing arrow with the point upwards. |
End of the speed limit. The signal is only valid for train journeys that have been permitted by the travel setting of a main signal and indicates that a speed limit prescribed by signal Hp 2 or signal Zs 3 has already been lifted before the end of the subsequent switch area . The shape signal is reflective. The shape signal introduced on a trial basis in December 1991 is no longer being set up again; it was replaced by stand-alone speed indicators (Zs 3). The light signal did not get beyond the planning status. |

Zs 12 - M-table | A white board with a red border and a red "M" in cursive. | On verbal or telephonic instruction, drive past the main signal that shows or is disturbed. | ||||||
Zs 13 - dead-end and early stop indicator | Shape signal: A yellow reflective “T” turned 90 ° to the left on a rectangular black board. Light signal: A flashing yellow "T" turned 90 ° to the left . |
Drive into a dead end or into a track with a shortened approach path. | ![]() |

Zs 103 - diamond plate (DV 301) | A rectangular black board with white diamonds. The diamond plaque is attached to the main signal. | The main signal showing stop does not apply to shunting departments. The diamond board Zs 103 is similar to the signal for level crossings called the diamond board Bü 2, but has a completely different meaning. |
