The German Railway Signal Regulations 1959 (ESO 1959) is a statutory ordinance that regulates the meaning of railway signals in Germany .

On January 4, 1875, the first uniform signaling order for the railways in Germany was issued. The first railway signal regulations of June 24, 1907 ( RGBl. P. 377) replaced the previous version of the "Signal Regulations for the Railways of Germany" of July 5, 1892 (RGBl. P. 733) and became adapted to the requirements several times over the course of time; So on March 12, 1910 (RGBl. p. 515), on September 16, 1923 (RGBl. II p. 372), on February 17, 1930 (RGBl. II p. 27) and on December 28, 1934 (RGBl. 1935 II p. 67).

The current version was enacted by the Federal Minister of Transport on October 7, 1959 on the basis of Section 3 (1) of the General Railway Act and entered into force on December 15, 1959 when published in Federal Law Gazette II p. 1021 . It was changed with the third ordinance of November 8, 1995, which came into force on December 18, 1995 ( Federal Law Gazette I, p. 1509 ); Most recently it was amended by Art. 498 of the ordinance of October 31, 2006 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 2407 ).

The "Compilation of the Regulations of the Railway Signal Regulations 1959 (ESO 1959)", compiled by the Federal Railway Office , Section 34, as of September 18, 2015, also serves as an aid.

The 1959 Railway Signal Regulations apply to public transport railways in the Federal Republic of Germany. It is binding for the railways of public rail traffic in the Federal Republic of Germany and prescribes the appearance and application of the railway signals used here.

The common signal book published by DB Netz AG for Deutsche Bahn contains the partially different signals of the two German railways, Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn , which were separate until 1993 . Since December 14, 2008, the signal book no longer contains the original text of the railway signaling regulations and the implementation provisions of the two former state railways, contrary to previous practice. The signal book contains the information relevant to the vehicle driver regardless of their origin. The illustrations of the signals in the signal book are for explanation purposes only; Only the description is binding for their appearance.
