A direction indicator ( Zs 2 ) is a railway signal used in Germany that shows the set route as an additional signal . The direction indicator ( Zs 2v ) announces a direction indicator for the specified direction of travel. In the area of application of the service regulations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DV), the designations were Zs 4 and Zs 4v until the standardization of the guidelines of the Deutsche Bahn AG .

With the help of a direction indicator, a driver can recognize a possible misdirection at an early stage, bring the train to a standstill and contact the dispatcher to correct the route.

The signal image of a direction indicator shows a luminous white letter, that of the more recent direction indicator shows a luminous yellow letter, which symbolizes the direction of the set route. The meaning of different letters is defined for each direction indicator. Often it is the first letter of the next station , sometimes an identifier for a specific track or part of the station.

Direction indicators must be set up if a misdirection would lead to an operational hazard, for example entering a section without an overhead line or with special loading gauge restrictions. They may be set up if the rest of the signal image does not allow a clear differentiation of the further route.

Direction indicators are only set up at DB Netz AG if train journeys at a speed of more than 60 km / h are permitted between the place where the main signal is to be visible and immediately behind the main signal; in the case of a distant signal repeater required to achieve minimum visibility closer than 100 m in front of the main signal, however, at the main signal.

On lines that are operated with ETCS Level 2 without signals (since the end of 2015 the new Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle line ), the direction is announced by text message via the driver's cab signaling .
