Geography and data

In the west the lake borders a forest and in the east lies the Gole della Tardara , a gorge through which the Carboj flows, which is the only outflow of Lake Arancio.

The Lago Arancio can hold up to 32 million km³ of water.

history

In 1949, work began on a dam , which was completed in 1952. The masses of water buried the Mazzallakkar Fort , a fort that was built in Sicily under the Arab rule. In 2000 the state left the Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli (LIPU) with the task of turning the lake into a natural oasis, especially for migratory birds.

Flora and fauna

Garigue , tamarisk , white willow and rush make up most of the flora present on Lake Arancio . The fauna is mostly made up of different species of migratory birds that stop at this lake because it is on their flight route. These include the gray heron , the teal , the whimbrel and the pintail . In addition to the classic mammals that live in Sicily, common toads , pond frogs , grass snakes , European pond turtles , angry snakes and Sicilian wall lizards live on Lake Arancio .
