Santa Margherita di Belice is a town in the municipality of Agrigento consortium outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Santa Margherita di Belice is about 60 km northwest of Agrigento . The city has 6257 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), who are mainly employed in agriculture.

Santa Margherita di Belice, together with the municipalities of Menfi , Sambuca di Sicilia and Sciacca, form a wine-growing region in Sicily. Since 1994 there has been a controlled designation of origin for quality wine (Denominazione di origine controllata) for the municipality's vineyards with the “ DOC Santa Margherita di Belice”. The cultivation quantities of the DOC wine of the same name are insignificant.

The neighboring municipality are Contessa Entellina ( PA ), Menfi , Montevago , Salaparuta ( TP ) and Sambuca di Sicilia .

history

The parish was founded in 1572 by Antonio Corbera. At that time it was given the name Menzil-el-Sindi. In the 1968 earthquake , the community was almost completely destroyed and then rebuilt.

Attractions

The parish church was renovated in the 18th century and is on the village square. There is also the Filangeri Palace from the 18th century and the Palazzata.
