history
The fertile region of Belice has been settled in history by Romans, Greeks, Normans and Saracens, among others. The latter were the first to build houses just below the castle, which was already built on a hill. The name Salaparuta is a word creation from the Arabic “Salah”, which in the 12th century referred to several farmhouses in the hills, and the family name “Paruta”. Girolamo Paruta, who was named “15th Herr von Sala ”had the“ Lignuduci ”quarter built, called the village - together with the existing Salah - comprising several houses, first“ Sala dei Paruta ”, later“ Salaparuta ”. At the same time he was appointed 1st Baron von Sala. The village was destroyed by an earthquake in 1968. Salaparuta was not rebuilt in the same place, but about four kilometers southeast of the old village center. The ruins of the old village - as in the other earthquake-affected villages in the area - were never cleared away.
Attractions
- Parish church with an old statue of Saint Catherine from the old parish church.
- From Salaparuta, the “Cretto di Burri”, also called “Grande Cretto di Gibellina”, about seven kilometers away can be seen very well. Alberto Burri (1919–1995) realized this land art monument from 1985–89; it was only completed in 2015 by other artists. In this art project, the ruined houses of the village Gibellina , which was completely destroyed by the 1968 earthquake, were completely covered with cement, so that Gibellina vecchia, the old village, is passable again along the old streets, while along the streets and paths the white prismatic house plots of up to six meters soar high.
