history
The city was founded in the 14th century. It was completely destroyed in a severe earthquake in the Belice Valley on January 15, 1968. Instead of rebuilding it, a new city was built 9 km further west.
A modern, sober city emerged from the drawing board, which cannot be compared with the established settlement structures of Sicily. Regular streets are divided by small squares and green areas. Two-story residential buildings in row houses with garages and small front gardens stand along the wide streets.
Numerous well-known architects, sculptors and painters donated works of art for the squares of the new city. These included, for example, Rob Krier , Oswald Mathias Ungers , Pietro Consagra , Arnaldo Pomodoro , Renato Guttuso and Joseph Beuys . Today Gibellina is the city with the highest density of modern art in all of Italy.
The residents never really embraced the concept of the newly built city. Some parts of the city are no longer inhabited. Many monuments and works of art have fallen into disrepair.
Attractions
The remains of the old town of Gibellina Vecchia and the new town of Gibellina Nuova are 9 km as the crow flies and 16 km by road.
Gibellina Vecchia
Part of the ruins of Gibellina was buried under a thick layer of white concrete by the artist Alberto Burri . Walkable cuts over the old streets give an impression of the narrowness of the original city. In the theater near the work of art, theater festivals take place regularly from June to October.
Gibellina Nuova
The Gibellina Star is a large, star-shaped gate that was built in 1980 by Pietro Consagra over the access road to Gibellina.
Some examples of modern architecture are the church La Grande Sfera with a spherical choir and the church Chiesa Madre by Ludovico Quaroni, which consists of a simple, cuboid and a spherical hall structure. Museums worth seeing are the Ethno-Anthropological Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, in which a large part of the artist donations from all over the world are exhibited.
