The Belice is a river in western Sicily . It has two source rivers: the approximately 45 km long Belice destro, which rises near Piana degli Albanesi , and the approximately 42 km long Belice sinistro, which has its source at Rocca Busambra .

The Belice has a total length of about 77 km (with the Belice destro). It flows through the metropolitan city of Palermo and the Free Municipal Consortia of Agrigento and Trapani and flows into the sea near the archaeological sites of Selinunte .

It feeds the Lago di Piana degli Albanesi and Lago Prizzi reservoirs .

Events

In ancient times the Belice was called "Krimisos". On the banks of this river defeated in June 341 or 340 BC. The Syracusans under Timoleon the Carthaginians in the battle of the Krimisos .

In an earthquake in mid-January 1968, numerous places in the Belice Valley were destroyed, including Gibellina , Montevago and Salaparuta . 231 to 370 people died and 70,000 were left homeless.
