Rocca Busambra is a mountain in the Monti Sicani mountains in the west of the Italian island of Sicily . It is located in the municipalities of Corleone , Godrano , Mezzojuso and Monreale in the province of Palermo .

Location and geology

With a height of 1613 m, the Rocca Busambra is the highest point of the Monti Sicani and western Sicily. Due to its height, the mountain dominates the landscape of the rather barren hilly landscape and is located in the nature reserve Bosco della Ficuzza . The elevation is characterized by the karst plateau of the summit, which is jagged by grottos and crevices. Flysch , limestone and dolomite are found on rock . In good conditions, the view extends from the summit to Mount Etna on the east coast.

ecology

The flora is typical of western Sicily. The mountain lies in the middle of the 7,398 hectare nature reserve designated as Riserva Naturale Orientata Bosco della Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra, Bosco del Cappelliere e Gorgo del Drago in 2000. The knapweed Centaurea busambarensis is named after the mountain. A type of rock yellow star ( Gagea bohemica var. Busambarensis ) occurs only here and also bears the name of the elevation. Other common plants are horn herbs or canine chamomiles . The mountain and the nature reserve are accessible with hiking trails. The starting point for this is a nearby Bourbon hunting lodge in the Ficuzza district of Corleone.

mafia

The proximity to one of the centers of the Cosa Nostra or the Corleonesi from the neighboring city of Corleone meant that in the past the mafia hid its members in hiding in the inaccessible hills and caves around the Rocca Busambra . She also let numerous victims of her murders disappear into the many crevices of the mountain.
