Kenan Şimşek (born June 1, 1968 ) is a former Turkish wrestler .

Career

Kenan Şimşek began as a teenager with the Turkish national sport of oil wrestling . From the age of 17 he also trained in Olympic wrestling. The club he joined was Büyükşehir Belediyesi Ankara . He wrestled exclusively in the free style in light heavy and heavyweight. His coach, who systematically led him to the top Turkish class, was Muhammed Oruç.

Kenan made his debut at the international senior championships in 1990 at the European championships in Poznan with an excellent 3rd place in the light heavyweight division. He did not do quite as well at the World Championships in Tokyo that year, but came in a respectable 6th place.

In 1991 he won the Mediterranean Games in the light heavyweight division, was not at the start of the European Championships and finished sixth again at the World Championships in Varna .

1992 turned out to be the most successful of his career. He finished third at the European Championships in Kaposvár by beating Kalojan Baew , Bulgaria . At the Olympic Games in Barcelona he fought his way to the final in the light heavyweight division, but had no chance there against the multiple world champion Macharbek Chadarzew from Russia , although he was only defeated with 0: 1 points. The silver medal was the reward for his good fights.

Also at the European Championships in Istanbul in 1993 there was a medal for Kenan with the 3rd place, whereby his 0: 1 point defeat against Sasa Turmanidze from Georgia in the pool final was very controversial. Most wrestling professionals saw Kenan as the winner.

The bronze medal from the European Championships in 1993 was the last medal he won at an international championship. In 1998 he ended his wrestling career, but was still active as an oil wrestler for many years and was Turkish heavyweight champion several times.

Kenan Şimşek was also well known in Germany because he fought for SV Siegfried Hallbergmoos in the Bundesliga for several years .
