Christopher Campbell (born September 21, 1954 ) is a retired American wrestler .

Career

Chris Campbell began his career Ringer at the High School in Westfield , New Jersey . He then studied at the University of Iowa and continued wrestling there . He developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler under the coaches Dan Gable and Gary Kurdelmeier. In 1976 and 1977 he was NCAA (US University Sports Association) Division I All-American Champion (US student champion) middleweight, after he had finished second in 1975. He won his first USA championship in 1983, also in the middleweight division.

His international wrestling career began earlier, namely in 1977 with a fifth place at the World Championships in Lausanne . There he suffered a defeat from Adolf Seger from Germany, among others . In 1978 and 1979 he was not used internationally. In 1980 he qualified as the winner of the trials for the Olympic Games in Moscow . The US Olympic boycott prevented its start.

In 1981 he celebrated the greatest success of his wrestling career at the World Championships in Skoplje . He became world middleweight champion. In the final battle he defeated Efraim Kamberow from Bulgaria on points. From 1982 to 1984 he was injured frequently and could not qualify for the world championships in those years. The US representative in those years was Mark Schultz , who also became an Olympic middleweight champion in 1984.

Chris Campbell resigned from active competition after 1984 and worked as an assistant wrestling coach at the Universities of Iowa , Iowa State, Cornell and Syracuse . In 1989, when he was almost 35 years old, he started a comeback with the “Sunkist Kids”, which he completely succeeded. At the 1990 World Championships in Tokyo , he was back at the start and became runner-up. In the final he was defeated by Maharbeg Kadarzew from the Soviet Union . He also fought very well at the 1991 World Cup, but did not make it into the medal ranks with fifth place. He had created the best conditions for winning the title with a victory over Maharbeg Kadarzew, which he gambled away again through a defeat against the Cuban Roberto Limontas.

He celebrated a wonderful end to his 15-year career at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona by winning the bronze medal.

After the 1992 Olympics, he finally ended his career as an active wrestler. He continued to be intensively involved in the sport, held a leading position in the US Wrestling Association, the US Olympic Committee and the US Boxing Association.

He currently works as a lawyer for a trading company and is involved in the United States Anti-Doping Agency in the fight against doping.

The results of the championships and some of the other tournaments he has participated in are shown in the following sections.
