Ismail Abilow , Bulgarian Исмаил Абилов , (born June 9, 1951 in Lopuschna ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler of Turkish descent. He was Olympic champion in Moscow in 1980 in free style middleweight.

Career

Ismail Abilov was a member of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria. There he came to wrestling as a teenager and was delegated to the Slavia Sofia sports club as a junior due to his sporting prospects . He developed into an excellent free style wrestler. He gave his premiere on the international wrestling mat in 1971 at the Junior World Championships in Nagoya. There he achieved an excellent 2nd place in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight behind the Iranian A. Esamaiii in free style. He was also very successful at the European Junior Championships in Hvar , Yugoslavia . He won there ahead of the German Frank Birke in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight.

Ismail Abilow has not yet qualified for a start at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . But he was back in 1973 at the World Championships in Tehran at the start and won in the middleweight division with four wins and a draw against Olympic champion John Peterson from the USA the bronze medal .

In 1974 and 1975 he was at the World Championships in Istanbul and Minsk Vice each champion . 1974 light heavyweight and 1975 middleweight. In the final fights he lost in Istanbul to a great man in freestyle wrestling, Levan Tediaschwili from the USSR, and in Minsk to one of the best German freestyle wrestlers of all time, Adolf Seger from Freiburg im Breisgau . At these championships he was able to defeat such good wrestlers as Pawel Kurczewski from Poland , Vasile Iorga from Romania , Mehmet Uzun from Turkey and Benno Paulitz from the GDR .

Ismail Abilow was also very strong at the European Championships in 1975 and 1976. In 1975 he won the middleweight title in Ludwigshafen am Rhein with seven victories. In the decisive battles he won over Günter Spindler from the GDR, Vasile Iorga and Mehmet Uzun. In 1976 he even succeeded in defeating the Soviet starter Viktor Novoshilov at the European Championships in Leningrad , but lost again in the final battle against Adolf Seger and became vice-European champion.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal he won the middleweight division against two easier opponents and against Vasile Iorga, but was then defeated by Mehmet Uzun and Viktor Novoshilov and therefore only ended up in 5th place.

Well recovered from this disappointment, Ismail Abilow started again in 1977 at the European Championships in Bursa . He won six fights there and was again European champion . He u. a. Defeated István Kovács from Hungary , Jarmo Övermark from Finland and Hassan Zangijew from the Soviet Union. He was very unlucky at the World Championships that year in Lausanne . He was injured in his first fight against István Kovács and had to retire.

Because of this injury, Ismail Abilow was also out for the whole competition year 1978 and could not start again until the World Championships in the fall of 1979 in San Diego . In San Diego he only managed one victory. He lost to István Kovács and the Soviet wrestler Magomedchan Arazilow and was eliminated after the 3rd round. He only reached 7th place.

Ismail Abilow, however, managed to get himself back into excellent shape in the winter of 1979/80. this was already evident at the European championship in April in Prievidza, Czech Republic . He achieved six wins in a row there and became European champion for the third time. With Oleg Kalojew he defeated another Soviet top wrestler. He couldn't be beaten at the Olympic Games in Moscow either. The strong US freestyle wrestlers were missing, but with victories over Magomedchan Arazilow and István Kovács, his Olympic victory was more than deserved.

After the Olympic Games in 1980, Ismail Abilow started in 1981 only at the so-called “World Super Championships” in Nagoya , an event of no great sporting value, and came third there behind Christopher Campbell , USA and Akira Ōta , Japan. Then Ismail Abilow ended his career as an active wrestler. He attended the national sports academy in Sofia and became a wrestler coach in Bulgaria. In the mid-1980s, under the communist government of Todor Zhivkov , he managed to escape to Turkey. There he lives under the name Ismail Nizamoglu and also works here as a wrestling trainer.
